Big Air

Postby Lotharsson » Wed Mar 02, 2011 11:26 am

New physics, old cars don't work - and my intuition about what should work on this track isn't very good either.

I hand-created a 325 car in v3.0 and a some evolution got it up to 420.2. Left it running while I was away for several days and reached 420.7 somewhere in 3500+ (!) generations. This one lands just before the last wall and disintegrates, adding a point or two as the back wheel keeps going.

I suspect this will be beaten fairly easily - but the v2.2 "climbing the wall" trick depends on finding a car that gets there without disintegrating.

Three independent solutions to Big Air. These were seeded from quite different v2.x winners, but seem to converge to similar shapes. None of them climbs.

Now up to 421 without climbing - seems to be a very similar car to my 420.7 that disintegrates a little bit more allowing the back wheel to get slightly closer to the final wall.

Hey guys, just joined. I've had the same issue with Big Air for V3 - none of my old designs work (such as Ulysses). I'll be focusing most of my efforts on this track again, as I want to see it "completed." I'll keep you guys updated with any progress I make, and post my best cars here.

Re: Big Air 418.1

I started out with my car for the Peak
Code: Select all
eNqzvynWrs3E42n/+HlOt/PURvsPDGBg/8BQ7WXFlX/2d9afFVJLS7N/tkHhyOylj+1v+V76uPL3c/sv8/eVndhiaX8HLBxs//RQf4zG10Nw/Y94PHfFmdrD+TD5O3uy6n7eVrL/bJ0SJbOGAyjF7iAwLbdv+YNg+x8MMMBs/0F0/yRxdSkkMaKBg2CLL+/LuVEMFAD770HVB3nOnGX4B+SA8N2r7Qz//jHA+WD8D4H/QGFiQw+c7XtaG6iKCQByomR9

It only does 1:07 there (other people have done 8 seconds faster), but it seemed like a good starting platform. It's reasonably quick, and it can handle a rough landing without coming apart.

I made a bunch of changes in the designer. I lengthened the nose and tail and added a bunch of bulk to the top to give it the mass it would need to really get moving. I ended up shaving some of that off again - after the first jump, it would make it too far and not have enough ramp for the second jump. After a bunch of tweaking, I had this car
Code: Select all
eNqzvynWrs3E42n//b51SpTMGvsPDGDgwDy91/++dar9nfVnhdTS0hw4IOL2t3wvfVz5+zmcf+XK38/bXBfaP9ugcGT20sf2zyaX7Mmq+2X/iMdzV5ypPcw8+6eH+mM0vh6yvwOU/XlbCaYfCNgdmCTKW6K4/9r/gIsx279QmB+ttGsZkhjRwEGwxZf35dwoBgqA/feg6oM8Z84y/AFyQPj25VaGP38Y4Hww/oPAv6Awvq4LzvY+qQlUxQQAlJxbJw==

It could do 240, making it over the jump then but then crashing on the landing. I thought that was a good enough start and handed it off to evolution.

Population size 12, mutation 2%, 2 wheels at 100%, and it only took 12 generations to make it to this car
Code: Select all
eNqzvynWrs3E42n//b51SpTMGvsPDGDgwDy91/++dar9K4EjGycwMNi//vY9Oy0tzf4p/4mABUB5dpkb86uNje0fHfe+oQykn21QODJ76WP7Z5NL9mTV/bJ/xOO5K87UHmae/dND/TEaXw/Z3wHK/ryt5MDBAAPsDkwS5S1R3H/tf8DFmO1fKMyPVtq1DEmMkYFI4CDY4sv7cm4UAwXA/ntQ9UGeM2cZ/gA5IPyrOI+hbo0AQ5GbEVzszx8E/libx/ALCOPrusA0CHqf1ASqYgIAto5bwg==

It can do everything but the last jump and gets a score of 418.1. SO it's definitely not there, but I'm going to be away for the weekend and will leave it running to see what it can do.

421.1

Postby Lotharsson » Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:04 pm

Tiny improvement via PSO. It crashes into the last wall slightly more compactly thus gaining 0.1 point. Not sure what it will take to make the last jump - if it's even feasible.

Argh. The "debris finish" feature makes this track even more frustrating in this version than the previous. I finally managed to evolve a cute little climber, which sure enough quickly developed into a crasher. Both low 420s.

I've also made it up to 421.1. It doesn't show any signs of making the last jump, though. Any thoughts on how to tune or breed for that?
