After some generations of no-wheel-cars on speedway which evolved into what is basicly a tire on a stick i started thinking.

My imagination run wild as i imagined cars that build their own tires out of useless shapes. Cars on random whould maybe evolve "spiky" tires, or use the "tire" as second body which could evolve strange and unknown locomotive behaviour. Take one shapetire and you have something inchwormy; take four and it's some sort of quatrupedic walk.
I'd love to see walking cars.

The chromosomes whould increase in size, maybe calculation use up more resources, so making it optional whould be fine.

Discuss.

Car within a car? :)
Can we go deeper? :ugeek:
Recursion?

Seriously, though, I like the idea. BUT the wheels need to be stronger than the chassis currently is, otherwise the cars won't get too far.

Hellyea, never thought of it that way.

Why not. The "wheel body" could host another one. You whouldn't deffine the max number of wheels, but the max number of shapes, regardless of their organisation.

I think the current strengh is appropiate, my stick'n-roll-cars don't come apart that easily. But to have controll over i whould be nice anyways.

You need to define the topology then. The most straightforward way would be: "body #2 is attached to the vertex #0 of body #0". etc. I suggest two parameters: max wheels and max recursion; each "wheel" is 1/2^n its scale if it's n layers deep in recursion.

@ honnza:

Sounds reasonable.

Here I compared a car body with magnitudes 1 and 1/2. The second one is perfect max-wheel-size.
I don't know what whould happen to a 8-wheels-in-a-row-car, though. 0.5^8=0.004..

I figured out another aproach: the wheel momentum depends on the number of wheels, so why not make the shape-wheel size dependant on the ultimate body-size.
The algorithm whouln't need to evolve around a predetermined body, but could divide it to fitt best.
